Minions crystallizes why these minuscule yellow creatures are such a sensation. The film was an unprecedented box office hit, grossing over a billion dollars and becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. Their journey of failures leads them to the 1960s where three minions in particular (Kevin, Stuart, and Bob) attempt one last chance at finding a villain only to become heroes in the end. This inevitably leads to their master's downfall, from the dinosaurs to Dracula, and even Napoleon Bonaparte. The film establishes the pre-historic origins of the titular heroes and shows their journey throughout history as they try to find an evil master to serve. The summer of 2015 marked the release of the first spin-off movie, fittingly and simply titled Minions. The minions were such a known quantity that the credits even tease what is to come.Ī star (or stars in this case) can only be kept on the sidelines for so long. Their gags are also expanded with two musical numbers from the minions, and if it was already fun for them to use their made-up language, it's even better when they sing "I Swear" and "YMCA" to cap off the film. Thus, the minions are brought more into the focus of the film itself. In the movie, the minions are captured and transformed to cause even more evil, and part of Gru's mission becomes saving them from the greater villain. Despicable Me 2 elevates the minions from side characters to being active parts of the plot. The sequel outgrossed the first movie and made nearly a billion dollars, eventually going on to be the only franchise entry nominated for any Oscars with one nomination for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Pharrell's "Happy." It also bares the unique honor of being the first film Quentin Tarantino showed his son.īy no coincidence, the more successful movie had a larger role for the minions. Over the course of the movie, Gru falls for the agent that recruited him, Lucy ( Kristen Wiig), and by the end, she is part of the family. Despicable Me 2 continues the story of Gru and his adoptive daughters, but rather than being evil, he is recruited by an agency to fight a different villain. Naturally, the success of Despicable Me led to a sequel in 2013. They're no longer just minions, but little characters with personalities that can be identified, even if they do blend together visually. I used the first names of staff members like Kevin Curran, Stewart Burns, Bob Bendetson, and about ten others." I chose from the blandest white guys I know: Simpsons writers. In order to contrast their weirdness, I gave them bland white-guy names. Throughout the script, Gru would always refer to them collectively as “boys,” but I thought it would be funny to address them each by name, since, to me, they were alike as a pile of little yellow Advils. ![]() Working as an uncredited punch-up writer, Reiss recalls, "My most lasting contribution was to Despicable Me’s Minions: I gave the little bastards names. So basically I get the highest PSI between midnight-2am when our local water tower is "filling up" with Detroit City water. The water pressure throughout the entire house is a lot lower than it used to be 30 years ago however, since that time a lot of new subdivisions have popped up and the City has built an auxiliary "local water tower" to help offset the cost of Detroit City water during peek hours. Today I can easily stop the water by placing my hand over the head. In the old days, it would be impossible for me to stop the water coming out of my shower head by placing my hand over the head. The City claims we get anywhere from 60-88 PSI depending on the time of day. ![]() There is no pressure-reducing valve at our house. Is low PSI necessary at the entry point before using a City water pressure booster pump, or can you have 70-90 PSI at the entry point and still use the booster pump to increase the PSI to 110-130? Many cities offer over 150 PSI at the high end. In any event, I don't care what some people say about anything over 80 PSI being "too strong." I grew up with over 120 PSI and everything was fantastic. I'm planning on upgrading to a 100 gallon water heater. I currently run out of hot water after 12 minutes on my 50 gallon water heater. Ruxton (2005) proposed an alternative, but not mutually exclusive, mechanism. First, when prey are aggregated, increasing density should not proportionally reduce the average distance to the nearest prey and thus the time to first encounter prey ( Travis and Palmer 2005). Two untested hypotheses have recently been presented to explain this result. ![]() However, a recent experimental study using great tits ( Parus major) searching for winter moth caterpillars explicitly tested this assumption for the first time and found that the time to first encounter did not decline with increasing density as steeply as would be expected from a directly proportional relationship between prey density and encounter rate ( Mols et al. This assumption seems initially reasonable and follows from analogy with physicists' models of collisions between randomly moving gas particles (e.g., Denny and Gaines 2000). 2004), an assumption forming the basis of many classical models in ecology (e.g., the Lotka-Volterra predator–prey model Lotka 1925). In numerous models using encounters between predator and prey, a central assumption is that the encounter rate of a predator with potential prey is directly proportional to prey density ( Mols et al. Once prey were encountered, the probability of attack increased with the number of cells already visited, leading to a higher probability of attacking first-encountered prey at lower prey densities.Īn encounter between 2 agents is the first step in any interaction between them, whether they are predator and prey, parasite and host, or randomly moving molecules. We also found an interesting effect of prey density on the likelihood that an encounter with a prey would lead to an attack. There was no evidence found, however, that spatial autocorrelation had any effect. ![]() Moreover, the greater this acceleration the less prey density and encounter rate were directly proportional. In the majority of our trials, the search rate accelerated as more of the arena was searched. The relationship between prey density and encounter rate was found to be less than directly proportional, confirming the findings of a previous study using great tits searching for caterpillars. Hence, the arena was effectively one dimensional, simplifying the recording of search paths and removing edge effects. The fish explored a novel apparatus of 16 cells (15 × 16 cm) arranged in a ring, with each cell connected to the 2 adjacent cells by small openings. Here, three-spined sticklebacks were used to test 2 recently proposed mechanisms based on predator search behavior that may induce this nonlinearity: the effect of increasing search rate over the course of the search and the effect of spatial correlation in areas searched. Although numerous influential models in ecology assume a directly proportional relationship between prey density and prey encounter rate, a recent test of this assumption found that the actual relationship was nonlinear (rising slower than proportionately). ![]() ![]() ![]() If you organize a meeting and display free/busy time for invitees from other time zones, their busy times are adjusted so that they are displayed correctly in your time zone.
